Gary Kasparov

Practically one week after Karpov, and very close to the historical match, Garry Kasparov lands Sunday evening at Manises airport, proceeding from Oslo, where he has been training for the revenge with Karpov, together with the child prodigy of the World’s chess.

Although he has completed most of his training in Croatia, Kasparov moved to Oslo to train with young Magnus Carlsen, who he has trained in other occasions with the objective of turning him into the best World’s player. However, the roles have changed, so that the ‘Ogre of Baku’ could practice for the semi-rapid and blitz games against Karpov.

Carlsen, 18-year old and with an enourmous potential, is the World’s chess promise. 2004, when he was 13 years old, he became Grand Master and he has reached successes such as making draw with Kasparov and winning Karpov.

Nevertheless, Carlsen isn’t going to form the team which will go with Kasparov during his days in Valencia. The one who is going to be with him is his inseparable mother and adviser, Clara Kasparova, the person who instilled chess into him, and who has always accompanied him to all the high levelled tournaments in which he has taken part; another sign of the importance Kasparov gives to this match. 1975, he curiously adopted his mother’s surname replacing it for the one of his father, Weinstein, who died when he was seven years old.

At the airport, Kasparov is practically going to coincide with another big attraction of this World’s chess event, the multimillionaire Arab, Dr. Sulaiman Al-Fahim, president of the Chess Federation of the United Arab Emirates, who comes to Valencia for meeting two of his idols, although the rumours say he could have a possible business plan.

On the other hand, Karpov has been one week in an apartment on the coast finishing his ambitious training. His apartment was on the maximum height possible, like he had required. For the occasion, ‘Tolia’ is surrounded by a group of first level trainers, formed by the champion Bologan (Moldova), Onischuk (Ukraine) and Riazantsev (Russia).
